Trakcja PRKiI to Strengthen the Subgrade and Structure of a Railway Embankment near Malbork

Strengthening of the subgrade and structure of the railway embankment and of the subgrade of the access road, and the removal of conflicts with utilities, are additional works to be carried out under the LCS Malbork contract. The task is being delivered in the design-and-build formula.

Trakcja PRKiI will carry out additional works on the railway embankment in Jurkowice, under the LCS Malbork contract on the Warszawa – Gdynia railway line. The scope of works includes, among other things, additional geological investigations of the subgrade, the preparation of multi-discipline detailed designs, and the removal of conflicts with, among others, a telecommunications installation and the low-voltage network. The main task will be to strengthen the subgrade and the railway embankment over a length of 200 metres. At the location of the works the embankment reaches a height of 10 m. The strengthening will be carried out using three types of subgrade reinforcement: 324 CFA piles with a diameter of 80 cm, 844 displacement piles with a diameter of 40 cm and compaction grouting carried out at 1280 points.

During the modernisation works, complex ground and water conditions with a direct impact on the stability of the railway embankment were found in the subgrade. The investigations carried out indicated the presence of soft organic soils in the subgrade – peat and silt – at a depth of 17 m. Raising the parameters of the railway line from the range of 70 – 120 km/h to 200 km/h requires additional strengthening of the embankment and of the soils beneath it.

Part of the works will also be the strengthening of the subgrade under the planned access road in Jurkowice. The scope of works will include the installation of nearly 600 displacement columns with a diameter of 40 cm, on which the structure of the designed road will be founded.

The value of the works planned until November 2014 has been set at PLN 20.9 million net.
