Trakcja Group Connects Europe – Via Baltica Links Lithuania with Poland
The company Kauno tiltai, part of Trakcja Group, has completed one of the most important infrastructure projects in the region – the modernisation of a section of the Via Baltica motorway linking Lithuania with Poland. The investment significantly improves international road traffic and increases the safety and comfort of travel in this part of Europe.
The official opening of the modernised section took place on 20 October 2025 on the Lithuanian–Polish border, with the participation of the highest authorities of both countries:
the President of the Republic of Poland Karol Nawrocki,
the President of the Republic of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda.
The presidents’ joint addresses underlined the symbolic and geopolitical dimension of the investment – as a physical and political link between nations with a shared history, values and goals. Via Baltica has been recognised as a strategic transport route strengthening defence capability, regional cooperation and economic development.
Traffic in both directions has been restored on a 12-kilometre stretch of the A5 Kaunas–Marijampolė–Suwałki road (from km 85 to km 97.06), where the speed limit is now 130 km/h. Built on this section were, among others:
3 viaducts,
11 roundabouts,
2 tunnels,
a modern car park with electric vehicle chargers, toilets and rest areas,
3 tunnel crossings.
– As a company with Polish capital, we had the honour of delivering this key section all the way to the Polish border. We worked intensively, taking care of quality and safety at every stage – from embankments to advanced engineering solutions. This is not only a link between two countries, but also an impulse for the mobility of the entire region – said Aldas Rusevičius, General Director of AB “Kauno tiltai”.
The value of the works on the final section was EUR 187 million gross. The project was financed from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF), the budget of the Republic of Lithuania and EU structural funds.
The modernisation of the entire 40-kilometre section from Marijampolė to the Polish border delivered:
6 new bridges and the reconstruction of 2 existing ones,
9 viaducts,
7 tunnel passages,
25 roundabouts,
90.5 km of connecting roads,
18.9 km of noise barriers,
the 2 most modern car parks in the country.
The project combines infrastructure development with care for the environment – innovative ecological solutions were used, including the first green bridges in Lithuania.
Via Baltica (E67) is one of the most important transport arteries in Europe on the north–south axis, linking Warsaw with Tallinn. 269 km of this route runs through Lithuania.
Congratulations on completing the project!
