“Kauno Tiltai” to Modernise the Last Section of Via Baltica
On 22 May 2024, AB “Kauno tiltai” signed a contract with a net value of EUR 154.7 million for the modernisation of the last section of the Via Baltica road, which runs from Marijampolė to the Polish-Lithuanian border.
Construction and modernisation works on the approximately 40-kilometre section of the route have been divided into 4 separate tasks. The contract concluded by our subsidiary concerns the 12-kilometre, final Lithuanian part of the Pan-European Transport Corridor, which is ultimately to link Poland with Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Finland.
The scope of the task includes, among other things, the construction of 3 tunnel crossings and a green bridge 82 m long for animal migration, 2 viaducts, 10 roundabouts and 15 km of connecting roads. In addition, approx. 5 km of noise barriers will be installed and a car and lorry park at the exit from Lithuania to Poland (Budzisko) will be modernised. Work on this section is to begin in June 2024 and finish in the second half of 2025.
“We always approach every project entrusted to the company ‘Kauno tiltai’ with full commitment, aware of its importance for society. Winning the tender for the modernisation of this section is a source of satisfaction for us, but also of obligation. We are ready to work hard, and our many years of experience in delivering similar projects give us confidence. What is more, we are no newcomers on Via Baltica – we successfully completed the modernisation of the third section at the end of last year, we know the specifics of the terrain and how to organise works on a tight schedule. It is symbolic that, as a company with Polish capital, we have the opportunity to complete the Via Baltica section all the way to the Polish border” – says Aldas Rusevičius, General Director of AB ‘Kauno tiltai’.
“Kauno tiltai” in 2023 completed the reconstruction of a 6-kilometre part of the Via Baltica route in Lithuania on the section from Marijampolė to the village of Skaidiškės. The road was rebuilt into a modern 4-lane motorway, with 5 new roundabouts, 4 viaducts, 4 bridges and more than 4.5 km of noise barriers built.
