Trakcja Group Strengthens Via Baltica in Lithuania
Kauno Tiltai, a company belonging to the Trakcja Group, will soon begin works on the reconstruction of a section of national road A5 Kaunas–Marijampolė–Suwałki, from Garliava to Mauručiai. It is one of the most important road investments in Lithuania, delivered as part of the international Via Baltica transport corridor.
The section being rebuilt is 6.86 km long and covers a stretch of road from km 16.465 to km 23.320. The aim of the project is to improve road safety, increase the route’s capacity and improve transit and local transport.
As part of the project, the existing infrastructure will be thoroughly rebuilt. The road will retain a four-lane layout, but all direct entrances and turning points will be eliminated. Local traffic will be moved to a new network of connecting roads with a total length of more than 10 km. Six roundabouts will also be built, along with a viaduct 153 metres long, which will enable grade-separated traffic on different levels.
– This is a project in which what matters most is not the number of structures being built, but the way in which all the elements of the infrastructure will function as one coherent system. Our task is not only to rebuild the road, but also to ensure that, once the works are completed, this section becomes safer, faster and more reliable for decades to come. We will be working in demanding conditions, maintaining traffic on one of the busiest transport routes in the country, so we will pay particular attention to the organisation of the works, quality and safety – says Aldas Rusevičius, General Director of Kauno Tiltai.
The scope of the project also includes the construction of infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists, storm and drainage sewer systems, the reconstruction and relocation of utility networks, the installation of noise protection measures, and landscaping. The project provides for the planting of about 400 trees and 1,700 shrubs.
The project stands out for its high degree of technical complexity. The works will be carried out while maintaining heavy road traffic, in a densely built-up area and in demanding geological conditions. For this reason, proper organisation of the works, traffic management and quality control at every stage of delivery will be of key importance.
After the reconstruction is completed, this section of the A5 will meet contemporary motorway standards, and the maximum permitted speed will rise from 90 km/h to 130 km/h. The solutions applied will help reduce the risk of accidents, improve traffic flow and provide more convenient connections both for residents of the region and for transit transport.
The contract value is more than EUR 29 million.
