Revolution in Ship Power Supply: KN Energies and Kauno Tiltai Project

Our subsidiary AB Kauno Tiltai and AB KN Energies signed a contract on 2 May 2025 for the design and construction of a modern connection of a power line to the LNG terminal in Klaipėda. The value of the project is EUR 19.3 million net. Under this investment the contractor undertook to design and install a power cable that will supply the LNG vessel Independence. The cable will extend across the territory of the city of Klaipėda and under the Curonian Lagoon.

The project also includes the construction of the necessary infrastructure on the quay of the LNG terminal and on the storage vessel itself, in order to ensure a safe and efficient connection with the shore. Thanks to this technological solution, the vessel will be supplied with electricity from the onshore grid, which will make it possible to switch off the auxiliary combustion engines while moored. This innovative approach will significantly reduce pollutant emissions and contribute to the protection of the environment.

The General Director of Kauno Tiltai, Aldas Rusevičius, notes: “We will strive for timely and high-quality delivery of the project, meeting the expectations of our client. We are aware of the challenges related to the uniqueness of the location and communication with foreign suppliers, in order to ensure delivery and installation of the necessary equipment within very tight deadlines. Our experience in delivering projects of this level and importance allows us to feel responsible, capable and determined to contribute to this sustainable solution by KN Energies. It is not only a direct connection of the vessel to the power grid, but also a reduction of pollutant emissions and protection of the environment.”

KN Energies AB emphasises that the LNG tanker Independence is one of the first LNG terminals in Europe to use this advanced technological solution.

The project is to be implemented within the next three years, bringing benefits both to the local community and to the natural environment.
