Work on the Radom Line to Speed Up Even Further

Warszawa Okęcie station is changing before our eyes. Work on the section is being carried out 24 hours a day. The scope of works will be further expanded following the receipt of another building permit, covering the section from Warszawa Okęcie station to Piaseczno station.

On the day the contract was signed, preparations for the contract were very advanced. We already had the necessary equipment assembled, two construction site facilities prepared and a contract office up and running – says Robert Kuczyński, Director of the Communications Office at Trakcja PRKiI.

The first phase was completed in just 10 days. It involved building a temporary platform, lighting and rebuilding more than half a kilometre of track together with the overhead contact line, which made it possible to switch traffic and start the next stage. In the second phase – lasting about 10 weeks –  the old platform and shelter were demolished and the track and overhead contact line were dismantled. About 6 kilometres of existing track were dismantled and nearly 3.5 km of new track and overhead contact line were built. At the same time, culverts and the bridge over the Służewiecki Stream (Potok Służewiecki) were rebuilt and a number of drainage works were carried out. Most of the supports for the footbridge were also built, ultimately linking the platform with the existing footbridge over the S79 road and Wirażowa Street.

In December, the third phase of construction will begin, and passengers will already be using the new platform. Track, overhead line and construction work will continue at the station, and once the next building permit is received for the six-kilometre section of railway line from Warszawa Okęcie station to Piaseczno station, the scope of the tasks under way will expand.

The execution of the works carried out to date has not affected the station’s capacity, so no noticeable disruption has occurred. Work causing traffic disruption, such as the delivery and dumping of aggregates, is carried out only at night. The area around Okęcie station will be a key logistics point until the end of the contract. We have gathered in one place all the necessary road and railway equipment, specialist vehicles for overhead contact line works and the necessary stocks of aggregates, sleepers and other materials, which allows work to proceed quickly – adds Robert Kuczyński.
