We Have a New Contract – We Will Modernise Gliwice Łabędy Station

Trakcja S.A. has concluded a contract with PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. for construction works and the execution design for the installation of railway traffic control equipment and railway network equipment at Gliwice Łabędy station. On 9 November, representatives of Trakcja S.A. and PKP PLK signed a contract worth more than PLN 425 million net for the modernisation of Gliwice Łabędy station.

The qualified and professional staff of Trakcja will carry out the task comprising the comprehensive reconstruction of the railway infrastructure together with the track bed, engineering structures, and the overhead contact line and telecommunications network. The scope of the contract includes the construction of platforms near the Kopernika housing estate in Gliwice and the adaptation of the existing platforms in the Łabędy housing estate area to the needs of people with disabilities and reduced mobility. The construction of a new railway viaduct is also planned, in the area of which the city of Gliwice will rebuild the road layout. Works planned in this way will allow the existing level crossing along ul. Wolności to be eliminated. The scope of the investment will include the installation of 90 turnouts, including, on a trial basis, a track crossing on concrete turnout bearers, the construction of 28 km of new track surface, and the installation of almost 40 km of overhead contact line. The construction of at least 2 bridges, 2 railway viaducts and 7 culverts. For passengers, 5 platforms will be built, including 3 island platforms. A new railway connecting line will be built, which will directly link the track layout of the nearby Gliwice Port with Gliwice Łabędy station.

As a result of the works, it will be possible to raise the current train speed to 160 km/h, and the capacity of the railway junction for freight transport will increase. Thanks to the installation of new railway traffic control equipment, safety will improve, and the added platforms will increase the attractiveness of the station for passengers.

– Thanks to modern control equipment, the level of railway traffic safety will increase. As part of the investment, control equipment will be installed at Gliwice Łabędy station. The interlocking district will comprise more than 70 signals and nearly 100 point machines. A modern computer-based interlocking system, designed and produced by Polish engineers, will ensure efficient and safe control of train traffic. In addition, as part of the investment, line block equipment with track vacancy detection and axle counters will be installed on the sections: Gliwice Łabędy – Taciszów, Gliwice Łabędy – Pyskowice, Szobiszowice – Gliwice Łabędy and Gliwice Łabędy – Gliwice Port. Both the computer-based railway traffic control systems and the new signal box will contribute to greater working comfort for train dispatchers, and the level crossing protection system will ensure the safety of road traffic – said Artur Szumisz, President of the Management Board.

The execution of the design work and construction works, together with acceptance procedures, is planned to take 50 months.
