Consortium of Trakcja, Pomorskie Przedsiębiorstwo Mechaniczno-Torowe and Alstom Polska to Modernise the Zabrzeg – Zebrzydowice Railway Line
Trakcja, Pomorskie Przedsiębiorstwo Mechaniczno-Torowe and Alstom Polska have signed a contract with PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe
The modernisation of railway line no. 93 on the Zabrzeg – Zebrzydowice – state border section will help accelerate the transition towards green mobility
The contract covers a range of construction works, including the construction of a railway line on a new alignment and the reconstruction of a station
On 5 April 2024, in Katowice, a consortium of Trakcja S.A. (Leader), Pomorskie Przedsiębiorstwo Mechaniczno-Torowe Sp. z o.o. and Alstom Polska S.A. signed a contract with PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. for the modernisation of the electrified double-track line between Zabrzeg and the state border in the Silesian Voivodeship. The aims of the investment include raising the maximum speed of passenger trains on this section to 160 km/h (currently 70–120 km/h), increasing line capacity, extending station tracks to accommodate freight trains up to 750 m long, increasing axle loads to 221 kN, and reconstructing the existing level crossings.
Under the contract, the companies will build, among other things, a railway line on a new route (a “shortcut”) between the Pruchna and Zebrzydowice stations. The new route, approximately 4 km long, will run through a very difficult area with varied elevation and wetlands. The works will include, among other things, draining the terrain, excavating cuttings up to 14 metres deep and building embankments up to approximately 8 metres high, after prior deep ground reinforcement. Along the “shortcut”, bridge structures 176 m and 600 m long will be built.
The total length of the line to be reconstructed is approximately 42 km, which amounts to more than 100 km of track. Zebrzydowice station will be thoroughly rebuilt – two island platforms, 200 m and 400 m long, and a new underpass will be built, giving passengers convenient access to both platforms. The new platforms will be accessible not only from the station building, as is the case today, but also from the side of Zebrzydowice town centre.
In addition, Trakcja will rebuild Pruchna station, which will be changed into a passenger stop. To serve passengers at the stop, two new side platforms 200 m long will be built, a dynamic passenger information system will be installed and street furniture will be put in place. Two new platforms each will also be built at Zabrzeg – Czarnolesie, Dromyśl and Chybie, and all platforms will be accessible to persons with reduced mobility.
Railway traffic control equipment and telecommunications network equipment will be designed and installed, among other places at the Chybie and Zebrzydowice stations.
– What makes this task exceptional is that between Zebrzydowice and Pruchna a completely new section of electrified double-track railway line will be built. On the existing route, the curve radii do not allow speeds of more than 100 km per hour; on the new route, trains will be able to travel at up to 160 km/h, which will not only shorten journey times but, above all, improve passenger safety. We have 75 years of experience in the railway construction segment, a qualified workforce and the appropriate equipment resources, and we are well prepared to deliver this task – says Andrzej Kozera, President of the Management Board of Trakcja S.A., Chief Operating Officer.
The companies have 48 months to deliver the task, which is worth more than PLN 1.6 billion.
