Photo Report from Łódź Widzew – Next Stage of Works Begins
From 15 June, trains will run into the modernised track layout of the station, and passengers will use the new, roofed Platform 3. Trakcja PRKiI is starting further construction of the underpass, platform and track layout and overhead contact line of Łódź Widzew station.
Passengers will use the new facilities – the platform and canopy – for the first time. Trains will run on new tracks, using a modern power supply and railway traffic control system. Access to Platform 3 has been marked out with a dedicated walkway running eastwards from the station building.
This completes the stage of modernisation which, in its first phase, required the dismantling of more than 28 km of track and 60 turnouts, as well as extensive earthworks and drainage works. 3,125 dump trucks of surplus soil were removed. In its place, 66,000 tonnes of aggregate were laid, equivalent to more than 1,600 wagons.
The next stage of works will involve continuing the construction of the platform canopy and Platform 2, completing the underpass and fitting it out with, among other things, lifts, and building a ramp for people with reduced mobility. At the same time, a further platform, Platform 1, with two edges and a length of 400 m, will be built. The tracks and overhead contact line associated with the existing Platforms 1 and 2 will also be replaced. The functionality and appearance of the areas directly adjacent to the station will be improved. An important aspect is the regulation of water and wastewater management across the station area, through the installation of environmental protection facilities. A special layer limiting the impact of vibrations on residential buildings will be built directly beneath the railway surface.
After modernisation, the station will have 3 platforms and 10 tracks, of which 6 will be intended for passenger trains, 2 for freight traffic and the remaining 2 for train formation. The Łódź Widzew station area will comprise 18 km of track with overhead contact line, and 53 turnouts.
