New Modernisation Contract: Trakcja Improves Travel Quality on the Wilkowice Bystra – Zwardoń Route

On 24 March 2025, Trakcja S.A. signed a contract with PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe for the modernisation of railway line no. 139, linking Katowice with Zwardoń. The investment, worth PLN 121.3 million net, will cover the section from Wilkowice Bystra to Zwardoń on the border with Slovakia. The works are to be completed by 15 December 2025.

The scope of works includes modernisation of the track surface, installation of new turnouts and drainage of the tracks on the section between Wilkowice Bystra and Zwardoń. In addition, 17 new turnouts will be comprehensively installed. The works will also include replacement of the surface at 46 level crossings, including access to platforms. Thanks to the modernisation, trains will be able to speed up from 50 to 70 km/h and from 70 to 120 km/h, which will shorten journey times in the Beskid Żywiecki mountains by up to a dozen or so minutes. The modernisation of railway line no. 139 will bring tangible benefits to passengers, shortening journey times and increasing travel comfort, which will have a positive effect on the daily lives of the region’s residents.

The works will begin in April on a stretch of the route between Rajcza and Zwardoń. First, the track will be replaced on the Rajcza – Zwardoń section, which will ensure travel comfort. A special PUN machine, that is, a train for continuous track renewal, will dismantle the old track and lay new rails and sleepers in its place.

The modernised infrastructure will allow heavier freight trains to run, which may contribute to the development of the local economy.
