WKD Voltage Change with Participation of Trakcja PRKiI
The Warsaw Commuter Railway (WKD) has completed the process of changing the voltage in the traction network from 660 V to 3 kV. The process of preparing for and switching to the new power supply system, which lasted several years, was carried out almost entirely by Trakcja PRKiI S.A.
The new 3 kV direct current power supply system for the WKD line was finally launched on the night of 27 to 28 May this year. The related works were spread over several stages, and after their completion a series of tests and trial switchovers was carried out, as a result of which, at the end of May, it was possible to run trains powered at 3 kV.
The upgraded power supply system is based on two traction substations in Pruszków and Grodzisk Mazowiecki and a sectioning cabin in Podkowa Leśna in the 3kV system, which replaced the previous 5 substations for 660 V. The facilities consist of, among other things, DC switchgear manufactured by Trakcja PRKiI and medium-voltage switchgear, rectifier units and remote control systems. The total value of the contract for the production, supply and installation of equipment and the commissioning of the system, signed in November 2012, was more than PLN 10.3 million gross.
